State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 (STAXI-2)
Charles D. Spielberger, Ph.D.
Revised and Expanded Edition
This revised 57-item scale incorporates the results of recent studies on the nature of anger and its effects on mental and physical health. It assesses the components of anger in the context of normal and abnormal personality, as well as evaluates the role anger may play in certain medical conditions, such as hypertension.
The STAXI measures both the intensity of anger as an emotional state (State Anger) and the disposition to experience angry feelings as a personality trait (Trait Anger). Angry Temperament and Angry Reaction are subscales of Trait Anger. Frequency of anger expression is assessed by three basic subscales: Anger-out, Anger-in, and Anger Control. Along with expanding these original scales, the STAXI-2 introduces new scales (6 scales and 5 subscales in total) including a measure of the frequency of anger feelings over time and the control of suppressed anger. An Anger Expression Index has also been added, providing an overall measure of total anger expression.
Individuals enter their responses to STAXI-2 items on a carbonless rating sheet. The item booklet contains a profile chart and a scoring grid for raw scores, percentiles, and T-scores. The carbon page of the rating sheet provides scores for the responses to each item. Scores are totaled and entered on the item booklet scoring grid.
The STAXI-2 is appropriate for use with individuals aged 16 and older who have 6th-grade reading skills. The STAXI can be administered and scored in about 15 minutes by individuals with limited training. However, interpretation requires professional training in psychology, psychiatry, or educational testing.
